About Us

Gour Mahavidyalaya, situated on the north side of Mahananda river where N.H.34 passes through Mangalbari, Old Malda, started its journey in the year 1985 to cater to the needs of the people, mainly of the district, as well as, those of this locality, in the field of higher education. Gour Mahavidyalaya, a premier institution for higher education of the Old Malda reserve constituency, has been trying continuing to free people from ignorance, superstition, had habits and many wrong ideas on the one hand and provides the people of this locality with some skill or special kind of knowledge enable them to earn a decent living on the other. The college, which started with Arts Stream, only had only had 35 students at the initial stage. As the days rolled on the number of students increased. Now the total number of students of this college is over 2100. As per affiliation of the North Bengal University of the college offers B.Sc courses with Physics, Computer Science and Mathematics from the academic session 2003-04. Moreover, the college, which receives affiliation from the North Bengal University, introduced Bio Science (General and Honour’s) course with Zoology, Botany and Chemistry w.e.f the academic session 2004-05 in order to fulfill the needs hopes and aspirations of the people of this district in general as well as the people of this locality in particular. The college has only day shift operating from 10.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. The college offers Honours in subjects : English, Bengali, History, Sociology, Education, Political Science, Journalism and Masscomunication, Mathmatics, Computer science,Chemistry,Zoology,Botany, Geography and General Course in subjects in Arts Stream : Elective English, Elective Bengali, History, Sociology, Education, Political Science, Geography in Arts Stream. The college has one Vocational Subjects i.e. Communicative English. This course of Communicative English is a Job-oriented Vocational Course. This is meant for regular students who want to develop their competence in English to perform various tasks using English efficiently and confidently. As per UGC guideline and the instruction of the North Bengal University this course of Communicative English is a Certificate Course of one year, two year and three years. The college has one Library with a stock of more than eleven thousand books and it is the subscriber of six. All India Journals in addition to the leading newspapers. The students of department of Education of our college stood first for four consecutive years in the University Examinations.

                                   

The college hostel,Shibram Chhatrabas is a Boys' hostel. It has the capacity to accomodate 40 students.Among these students 22% are reserved for S.C. and 7.5% for S.T.After the completion of College Admission,the hostel admission commences. Admission to hostel is made strictly on the basis of merit and also considering the distance of the residence of the ward from the college.                                                       

                



Rules and regulations

· Guests are not allowed.

· Boarders must enter into hostel campus within 8 pm.

· Water is precious;do not waste water.

· To preserve hostel trees.

· Loitering on the top floor is strictly prohibited.

· Anybody who becomes unsuccessful is not allowed to stay in the hostel.

· Hostel mess is managed by the hostel boarders.

· Newspapers,Carroms,Crickets,Badmintons,Volleyballs,colour TV are available for recreation of   the boarder and a telephone    connection is there for communication.
